Multimode Fiber Specs

(OM1, OM2, OM3, OM4)

OM1 and OM2 fibers were the first multimode fibers for the telecom market. The OM1 standard described multimode fibers with a 62.5um core area while the OM2 standard described multimode fiber with a 50um core. Both OM1 and OM2 multimode fibers are typically used with LED based transmission systems. Two more 50um core standards, OM3 and OM4, are now available and are commonly used for 10 gigabit transmission systems that use lasers instead of LED’s.
